If you are still awake, you are officially welcome to those nights when my mind, heart, and body are bickering about what to do. The mind wants to be creative (so we are writing), the heart wants to speak to someone who cares (so we are writing), and the body wants to rest (so we are also writing).
By the way, sometime last year, I paid close to half a thousand British Pounds for a writing course which I have yet to find time to complete. Last night, I started my course. Congratulations to me! This night is my second night, and man, I am on fire!!!
I tried the 'stream-of-consciousness thought' this morning. It is a useful exercise that attempts to capture subconscious thoughts your brain has had overnight. It is stream-of-consciousness writing indeed because you simply write anything that comes into your head when you wake up. You don't analyse it or re-read it until you have finished writing. You simply write.
Tonight, I am trying the Five Senses exercise. As a writer, I need to be an observer, absorbing everything I see because often, it is those little details that my readers enjoy the most, adding authenticity to my work.
In a two-step exercise, I want to write about my favourite place. And I hope in the end you will fall in love with my favourite place as much as I have.
Step 1: Sense of sight only.
My favourite place has no address, only a destination. It is like a big house that floats in the air. I have always loved it because the thought of being in one makes me feel rich. However, inside my favourite place, I saw there was a place for the rich, the middle class, and then the regular people. Now, I am left with the longing to try the remaining two since I have enjoyed the latter.
My favourite place reminds me of another favourite place (a classroom). We all sat facing the front. When you are seated, you feel short, but when you stand, you feel taller simultaneously. My favourite place is the closest I have come to actualising the great wish: "The sky is your starting point." Because when I looked outside from the window of an aeroplane, I could only think to myself that the sky was definitely not the limit but the starting point.
Step 2: Sense of smell, taste, sound, and touch.
My favourite place smells like the sitting room of a wealthy man. I think to myself that it is in part a result of the mixture of the perfume of all the good people from all walks of life travelling to different locations for different reasons. Furthermore, it could be that they treated it with an artificial scent to overshadow everyone's perfume. Or, lastly, the smell of the furniture and fittings, and nothing else.
If an aeroplane is to have a taste, it does taste like the Haribo star mixes the egg jelly beans. As for sound, if you have a noise-cancelling ear device, try the ambient mode while lying down and pressing your ear to your pillow. Then you have what I think the inside of an aeroplane sounds like.
My brain
My brain is still awake. What should I write about? Inside my head, it seems like the rain is pounding against the window, so I'm not in a hurry to get up this morning! Even though it is summer, it is not so… I'm quite comfortable where I am, thank you.
When I stick my foot out from under the duvet – wow! It's cold out there! Nope, I'm staying in bed for another twenty minutes until my alarm goes off. Then, perhaps, I will recite the 3:00 AM 'Divine Mercy Prayer.' Despite the rain hammering against the window, I can still hear the rhythmic ticking of my clock. How is it so loud that I can hear it over the rain, yet it didn't keep me from falling asleep last night? How does that work?
Many thanks for reading my perspective and giving feedback.
My fervent wish is for the personal growth of everyone and the success of all young professionals who put their hearts and souls into finding their purpose in life.
